Recruiters Won't Respond. Now What?

READ TIME - 4 MINUTES

Networking can feel like shouting into the void when recruiters or hiring managers don’t respond. Today, we’ll tackle how to craft messages that get replies, making networking a more productive and less frustrating experience.

Common Solutions and Why They Might Not Work:

  • Generic Messages: Sending the same message to multiple people may save time but often comes across as impersonal.
  • Long Emails: Providing too much information can overwhelm the recipient, leading to your message being ignored.
  • Immediate Requests: Asking for job opportunities or favors in your first message can be off-putting.

A Better Approach For You:

  • Personalization: Research the individual you're contacting. Mention recent achievements or specific projects they’re involved in. This shows genuine interest and effort.

Example: “Hi [Name], I noticed your recent project on [specific topic] and found it really inspiring! I’m particularly interested in how you approached [specific aspect]. Nicely done.”

  • Be Concise and Clear: Keep your message short and to the point. Highlight why you're reaching out and what you hope to discuss without overwhelming details.

Example: “I’m excited about the work you're doing in [industry/company/role]. I'd like to be more like you and I think I'm on the right track. Would you say [professional skill/trait] is what has most led you to your success? I know you're busy, so if you're not able to respond, that's totally okay! Hope you have a great week!"

  • Offer Value: Think about how you can be helpful to the person you’re contacting. Offering something of value can make your message stand out.

Example: “I came across an article on [relevant topic] and thought you might find it interesting considering your recent work on [project]. It seriously opened my eyes to [topic of the article] and I plan to use it in my next project. Hope you find it useful too!”

  • Follow-Up Thoughtfully: If you don’t get a response, wait a week or two before sending a polite follow-up. This shows persistence without being pushy.

Example: “Hi [Name], I wanted to follow up on my previous message. Any thoughts? I know you're busy, so if you're not able to respond, that's totally okay! Hope you have a great week!"

Summary

  • Personalize your messages to show genuine interest.
  • Keep your communication concise and clear.
  • Offer value to make your message stand out.
  • Follow up politely if you don't receive a response.
