How To Stay On Track With An Overwhelming Career Change

READ TIME - 4 MINUTES

Career changes take a ton of time and energy.

Creating a schedule and knowing if you're on the right track is crucial. Without a plan, it's easy to lose focus and feel unsure about your progress.

I want you to:

Stay consistent.

Stay motivated.

Maintain momentum.

Have confidence.

A structured plan is the thing that stands between you and your next job.

Common Solutions and Why They Might Not Work:

  • Ad-Hoc Planning: Some people try to tackle career changes without a clear plan, addressing tasks as they arise. This leads to missed opportunities and a lack of direction.

  • Overloading Your Schedule: Packing your schedule with too many tasks = burnout and decreased productivity. Being busy busy busy does not equal actual progress. It just means you're good at doing stuff. It’s important to strike a balance. Seriously. Your mental health depends on it.

  • Lack of Milestones: Without having sign posts or "mile markers," you won't be able to gauge progress or stay motivated. You'll start feeling lost or discouraged (if you aren't already...).

A Better Approach For You:

  • Create a Weekly Schedule:

Break down your career change tasks into manageable chunks. Allocate specific times each week for self-assessment, research, networking, and application processes. This helps ensure you're making consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed.

    Set Clear and Actionable Goals:

Define clear and actionable goals for your career change. For example, aim to do a self-assessment by the end of week one. Connect with five industry professionals by the end of week two. Make sure your goals are clear, practical, and time-bound (and no, I don't mean "Get a new job by the end of the month.")

    Track Your Progress:

Use spreadsheets, journals, or project management apps to track your progress. Regularly review your goals and adjust your plan as needed. Celebrate small wins to stay motivated.

     Get Serious About Feedback:

Regularly seek feedback from mentors or career coaches. They will provide insight into your progress and help you adjust your strategy.

As I told one of my recent clients,

"Help is waiting for you. You just need to be brave enough to ask for it."
