SEPTEMBER 21, 2024

I Got My First Post-Teaching Job In The Fall

READ TIME - 3 MINUTES

I was desperate to leave teaching.

It was only one month in to the school year and I was itching to get out.

I spent the entire summer applying to jobs and didn't get hired.

Then, it happened.

I got the offer and started at my new company by the end of September.

Here's the issue you're having though...

You're feeling overworked and too tired to job search during the school year.

It's damn near impossible to juggle everything and think about a career change at the same time.

Putting this off until a better time is costing you your mental health.

Plus, waiting to search for a new job could keep you stuck longer in a role that drains you.

The sooner you start, the sooner you can move into something that aligns with your goals.

"BUT STEPH, I need to protect what little energy I have and avoid a quicker burnout!"

Yes! I totally agree!

Let's talk about logistics.

Common Solutions That Won't Work:

  • Waiting for "less stress": There’s rarely a perfect time. Putting it off keeps you in a job you’re ready to leave.
  • Rushing the search when you have bursts of energy: Beware of those rare moments of motivation- rushing can lead to unfocused applications or decisions made out of urgency instead of clarity.
  • Trying to do it all: Balancing your current job and a full-on job search adds stress and doesn’t guarantee better results.

Do This Instead:

Try "micro-progress". Make small steps each week to keep things manageable:

  1. Set small goals: Aim for 10-15 minutes a day to tweak your resume or research roles. Keep it light.
  2. Find your low-stress time: Use a break or a quiet moment in your week for quick job search tasks.
  3. Use templates: Save time by customizing a ready-made resume and cover letter. (Ah-hem: I've got that for you!)
  4. Be laser-focused on jobs you actually want to do: Fewer, well-crafted applications get better results than many rushed ones.

Your Next Steps

Ready to get 'unstuck' from the grind to get your job search on track?

  • Spend 10 minutes updating a part of your resume.
  • Research one company that excites you this week.
  • List 5 people to connect with for advice or job leads.

The key to getting a job during your busy season is to put in the work in manageable ways.

Micro-progress is in, all-or-nothing job search rushes are out.

Hope you'll give this a try.

See you next week.
