Master LinkedIn Networking in 7 Simple Steps

Here's how you use LinkedIn PROPERLY:

Don't shoot from this hip and try to connect with a ton of people just because they work at such-and-such company.

That's a waste of time.

You want to get clear on the types of roles you want and then engage with key industry leaders.

By liking, commenting, and re-sharing their content, you'll not only learn from them but you will increase your visibility and that's exactly what you want.

So, here's the exact method I used when I left the classroom (and perfected over the years).

Consistency is key here—the more you engage, the more visible you become.

Increased visibility and a reputation for being a player in a specific industry = OPPORTUNITIES!

YOUR NETWORKING GOAL:

Follow & interact with 10 relevant influencers or companies each week.

HERE'S HOW:

  1. Open LinkedIn and Use the Search Bar

Log in to LinkedIn and locate the search bar at the top of the page.

  2. Type Relevant Keywords

In the search bar, enter specific keywords related to the industry you’re interested in, such as:

    • “Marketing Experts”

    • “Software Development Leaders”

    • “Nonprofit Managers”

Example: Type “Project Management Expert” and hit enter.

  3. Filter the Results

After entering the keyword, click on the "People" tab to narrow the results to individuals. For a more focused search, use filters like “Location,” “Connections” (2nd or 3rd connections), or “Current Company” (if you’re targeting specific organizations).

  4. Identify Influencers

Browse through the list and identify individuals who are active in their industry. Clues that someone is influential include:

    • Job titles that indicate leadership (e.g., Director, VP, Manager).

    • Profiles showing consistent engagement, such as regular posts, shares, or insightful comments.

    • High follower counts and engagement metrics (e.g., 500+ connections).

  5. Engage with Their Content

Visit their profiles and see if they post regularly. If they do, interact with their content by liking, commenting, and sharing.

Don't just give a thumbs up. Don't just comment "Cool." Anyone can do that. The goal is to stand apart.

Make your comments thoughtful and relevant. For example: “I found your insights on [topic] really helpful. It’s great to see fresh perspectives on [industry challenge]. Here's a great article I read recently that talks about the same thing! [Insert article]”

  6. Follow Them to Stay Updated

Once you’ve identified key people, click “Follow” to receive updates on their activity. This is a simple way to keep up with their latest thoughts and contributions.

  7. Personalize Connection Requests (Optional)

If you feel comfortable reaching out directly, click “Connect” and add a personalized note.
For example: “Hi [Name], I admire your work in [field], particularly your recent [article/post]. I’m very interested in [related field] and would love to connect to learn more about your journey.”

My Final Thoughts On This Oh-So-Important Topic:

Networking should never be transactional. Approach all interactions with these three things and you'll be golden: curiosity, authenticity, and consistency.

Over time, these efforts will compound, and your professional network will expand in a way that will eventually drive others to want to connect with YOU as an industry leader.

Do yourself a favor and get started on this right now. As in, literally, right this second.

See you on LinkedIn!
