Want To Say Goodbye To Teaching? Use This Proven Career Change Cheat Sheet

Feb 21, 2024

I know exactly who you are. You're a dedicated educator dreaming of a new chapter in the corporate world. With the current demand for leadership, communication, and adaptability skills, the transition from teacher to corporate leader is not just possible—it's a logical next step for many. Through my own trial and error, I've figured out EXACTLY how to streamline YOUR career transition.

Whether you're yearning for a fresh challenge, a higher salary, or the opportunity to influence change at a greater scale, use this career change cheat sheet as your guide.

START HERE: Discover Your Roadmap To Career Change Success

The first step is to understand why your experience is more valuable than gold in the eyes of corporate employers.

> Understand Why Companies Value Teachers

Employers need the leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills that you have. Most importantly, they NEED innovative problem solving. Consider all of the other critical skills you have to offer and stop selling yourself short.

> Acknowledge and Overcome Challenges

Change is not easy, but it's always possible. Recognize that switching from teaching to a corporate career may have hurdles, but if you commit to adaptability and resilience, you'll be a success in record time.

THEN: Identify Your Transferable Skills

This is your bread and butter—recognize that teaching is just ONE flavor of a multi-skilled talent you offer.

> Build a Comprehensive List

Begin by listing all the soft and hard skills you've honed as an educator. These might include curriculum design, mentorship, problem-solving, and time management, among many others.

> Research Opportunities

Look at job descriptions in the corporate field you're interested in and identify the skills and qualifications required. Compare these with the skills you've developed as a teacher to understand where your strengths lie and how they align with corporate roles. For instance, educational technology, training and development, and corporate social responsibility are areas where your background can instantly add value.

> Apply Strategically

Once you've identified roles you like,  tailor your applications to highlight the where your skills can be applied to the job description's needs.. Be selective, as in don't blindly send in 100's of applications, AND don't shy away from more senior positions that can leverage your strengths.

NEXT: Demonstrate Your Value

You've got the tools, now it's time to show you know how to use them.

> Showcase Transferable Skills

Be explicit about your most valuable skills. Recruiters need to see not only what you've done but how it translates to their business context and specific job-posting requirements.

> Craft a Cohesive Narrative

Your story should flow seamlessly from teaching highlights to corporate ambitions. A consistent theme in your application materials will resonate powerfully with potential employers.

AFTER THAT: Network Like A Pro

Networking is the supercharger of your career; do it effectively and authentically.

> Enhance Your Online Presence

LinkedIn is your personal billboard and anyone looking at your profile forms an opinion of you in less than 30 seconds. Ensure your profile is up-to-date and CLEARLY shows what you want as your next job.

Position Yourself as an Expert So Recruiters Come To You

If you're not sharing your professional insights, nobody will know what's on your mind. Does that mean share EVERY thought that comes to mind? No. Absolutely not. Be an active, informed presence in online spaces that speak to your new industry, not emotional trauma from teaching. Share professional insights, engage with relevant content regularly, and connect with thought leaders. Do this daily.

Utilize Templates and Best Practices

Develop a collection of networking tools—intros, follow-ups, thank-yous—that can be customized for various connections and job opportunities. Anytime you write one, save it so you can recycle it. Want these done for you so you can plug-and-play? Check out Module 4 in the Accelerator.

Network Authentically

Your network is not there just to help you. Genuine connections are where you seek to give help to your network in the form of advice, feedback, or collaboration. Seek to give first and you will see momentum building where people seek to help you.

MEANWHILE: Nail Your Interviews with Psychology-Backed Tactics (and GET HIRED!)

When you finally get that interview, you're more than halfway there. Don't leave anything up to chance!

Systematize Your Efforts

Use a job search tracker to organize applications, interviews, and follow-ups. This level of organization not only prevents oversight but eliminates stress like you wouldn't believe. Nothing will fall through the cracks on your watch. Want this done for you? I've already built this so you can save time and get through the stressful stuff quickly. Check out Module 5 of the Accelerator.

Prepare Thoroughly

Anticipate and practice your responses to common interview questions. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to craft targeted, impactful responses to interviewer questions.

> Develop Insightful Questions

Arm yourself with thoughtful questions that not only set you apart but also provide deeper insights into the role and company.

> Negotiate with Confidence

Research standard salaries in your desired field and region on websites like www.glassdoor.com and www.indeed.com. When you need to have a conversations about compensation, always come ready with research, data, and a clear sense of your worth (the first two are easy. Do yourself a favor and really work on the third part.).

> Send Thank-You Notes

Gratitude is a powerful feeling that should be expressed after every interview. A well-crafted thank-you note can leave a lasting positive impression. Did you know that only 25% of people send a thank-you note while 80% of interviewers said they are helpful in making hiring decisions?! Don't miss out on this easy win.

AND FINALLY: Set Yourself Up for Future Success & Get Promoted In 1 Year

This is where your career takes off. A solid plan will help you launch into your most rewarding professional season yet.

> Combat Impostor Syndrome

Believe in your transition—your skills are real and relevant. Establish a strong support network and remember that new beginnings are challenging for everyone.

> Advocate for Yourself

Track and document your successes. Regularly review your contributions with your managers and stakeholders. Visibility is key to upward mobility. Want a plug-and-play tracker that's already made for you? I've got you. Check out Module 6 in the Accelerator.

By carefully following each step I've listed, you'll go from educator to corporate leader in record time.
