Teacher Career Change, Jobs for Former Teachers

Updated: 03/24/25

From career coaching to mental health to youth services, these roles let you keep doing what you do best—helping people—just in a different setting. Former teachers land these roles every week. You’re not behind. You’re just getting started.

Note: Salary ranges are general estimates based on commonly available salary information from sources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), PayScale, and Glassdoor. Keep in mind that these figures are approximate and can vary depending on location, experience level, industry, and company size.

  • Career Counselor

    Salary Range: $40K - $70K per year

    What it is:
Career Counselors help individuals figure out their next steps. That could mean guiding a high school student toward college or supporting an adult making a career change. They offer 1:1 coaching, administer assessments, and help with resumes, interviews, and job searches.

    Why you're a fit:
You already support students in discovering their interests, developing confidence, and planning for the future. Your ability to break down pathways, give feedback, and motivate others translates beautifully to career coaching.

    How to land it:
Start with roles at high schools, colleges, workforce development centers, or nonprofits. If you have a master’s in counseling, you're already qualified for school-based roles. For private practice or corporate roles, consider training in career development or coaching certifications (like NCDA’s Facilitating Career Development course).

  • Mental Health Counselor

    Salary Range: $40K - $70K per year

    What it is:
Mental Health Counselors work with individuals, couples, or groups to address emotional and psychological challenges. They offer therapy, create treatment plans, and often collaborate with medical professionals or schools.

    Why you're a fit:
You've supported students through anxiety, trauma, grief, and self-esteem issues—whether it was in your lesson plans or your classroom conversations. You already bring deep empathy, active listening, and a calm, trusted presence.

    How to land it:
You’ll need a master’s in counseling or a related field and a state license (such as LPC, LMHC, or LPCC). Many educators complete programs while still teaching or during summer breaks. Look for graduate programs that offer flexible or hybrid formats.

  • Social Worker

    Salary Range: $45K - $70K per year

    What it is:
Social Workers help individuals and families navigate challenges related to housing, mental health, child welfare, and more. They connect clients to resources, advocate for their rights, and support long-term well-being.

    Why you're a fit:
You’ve been a bridge between students and services. You’ve advocated for IEPs, called home when things didn’t feel right, and coordinated with social workers and therapists. You already understand how to support the whole person.

    How to land it:
You’ll need a BSW or MSW to work in most licensed roles. Entry-level positions like Case Manager or Family Services Coordinator are often open to those with a bachelor’s degree and experience working with youth or families.

  • Youth Advocate

    Salary Range: $35K - $60K per year

    What it is:
Youth Advocates support young people facing challenges like foster care, homelessness, or juvenile justice involvement. They act as mentors, connect youth to services, and help them build skills, confidence, and long-term plans.

    Why you're a fit:
You’ve spent your career building trust with kids who don’t trust easily. You’ve advocated for them behind the scenes, helped them believe in themselves, and navigated complicated systems with them.

    How to land it:
Look for roles at nonprofits, youth shelters, advocacy centers, or juvenile justice organizations. No licensure is required, and your classroom experience will be a major asset. Bonus if you've led mentorship programs or worked with at-risk youth populations.
